Domains

This information is intended for WA government agencies and WA Local Government organisations requesting a new WA Government domain name or modifying existing details, such as Domain Name Servers. WA Government domain names are those ending with .wa.gov.au or others as registered/administered through ServiceNet.

New *.wa.gov.au domains

Please note:

  • wa.gov.au applications are made using NetRegistry’s domainname.gov.au system.
  • Applications for domains are reviewed by the Public Sector Commission (PSC). PSC have published policy requirements for domain name approvals on their website.

Recommended steps:

  1. Review PSC’s policy requirements.
  2. Please read the Government Domain Policy and the Eligibilty and Allocation Policy.
  3. Check the availability of your domain name using this whois facility: http://govau.netregistry.net/rego/execute/whois.
  4. Complete the domain name application on PSC’s website.
  5. Apply for the domain here: http://wa.govau.netregistry.net/rego/
  6. Upon approval of your PSC domain name application in Step 4, the domain application in step 5 will be approved.

Renewing *.wa.gov.au domains

When your domain is due to expire, the NetRegistry system will send you an email (a good reason to use group email accounts when registering new domains in case of staff turnover). If you have forgotten your username &/or password, you can recover both from this page by using the Domain Name field:

http://wa.govau.netregistry.net/execute/forgottenAccount

You will be sent an email that has a link to change your password. Note that the email will also contain your username. You can then use the username and new password to login and renew your domain here:

http://wa.govau.netregistry.net/

Domain Name ownership transfer

You may wish to apply to manage a domain name that is currently registered to another agency or another account-holder within your agency. This may be due to a machinery of government change, or a change of staff responsibilities within your organisation. Click here:

Domain Name Server changes (DNS zone files)

http://govau.netregistry.net/rego/execute/whois will help you idenitify who manages your domain’s DNS. If your domain is managed by ServiceNet (ie: if the domain’s primary Nameserver is karri.bs.wa.gov.au or ns1.servicenet.wa.gov.au), you can request changes (eg: A, MX records) with ServiceNet HelpdeskIf your domain is NOT managed by ServiceNet, you will need to request changes with your ISP or the custodians of your nominated Domain Name servers.

Nameserver (glue record) changes

Domain owners can manage (add/remove) the nameservers for their *.wa.gov.au domains via the NetRegistry console: http://wa.govau.netregistry.net/. If you try to add a nameserver and receive an “Object does not exist” error message, you will need to create the nameserver first as per the advice below.

Nameserver (glue record) creation

In order to add a new *.wa.gov.au nameserver to your domain (eg: ns1.YOURAGENCYNAME.wa.gov.au) , it must first be created with the NetRegstry management console. You can do this via the same admin screen where you are trying to update nameservers. See the link at the bottom of the admin screen “Click here to manage domain hosts”. Once you’ve added it , you should then be able to use it as a nameserver for your domains.
